I guess when I’ve cosplayed, I’ve been lucky. I never had anyone tell me to my face that my cosplay wasn’t good enough or I didn’t have the right face/body. No doubt they probably thought those things. But, these types of remarks seem to be a common theme throughout the community. When I see catty remarks in comments of a cosplay picture, all I think is, “Why?”. What’s the point? Does it make the commenter feel better about themselves? No doubt we are all allowed to have opinions, but why do some people feel the need to put others down? I saw this first hand on my Facebook the other day, and a cosplayer wrote a well thought out comment about how it’s not okay for people to hide behind the anonymity of the internet to harass others;
“I’m just really tired of the excuse, ‘well it’s the interenet’. People should be striving to make the communities they are part of better, not make excuses for poor behavior. I spent years being really angry and criticizing people on every inch of their costumes. It’s no way to live. Put that anger and energy towards something more productive. People should always remember, when you are spending your time being angry about something or incessantly judging, that person you are doing it to is probably spending their time getting better and learning new things”
I guess it’s time for the old cliche saying, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothin’ at all.”
